TO SEE THE CULTURE WINDOW
As an Islamic kingdom, sovereign kingdoms in Java have traditions that are thick with Islamic culture, but Islamic culture is always integrated with the culture of the local community. One of the influences of Islam in the Javanese Society Tradition is the commemoration of the Islamic holidays, while the ceremony itself includes:
GEREBEG
Grebeg celebrations are generally held when commemorating special days in Islam, such as the birth of Rasullullah S.A.W (Grebeg Maulud), Commemoration of Eid al-Adha (Grebeg Besar), Eid al-Fitr (Grebeg Syawal), and Islamic New Year (Grebeg Sura). In this ceremony, the organizers celebrated the prosperity given to the community by offering gunungan, usually in pairs and each called gunungan jaler or kakung (male) and gunungan estri (female).
Gunungan is composed of crops that are assembled in a mountainous frame. After being paraded, the produce was contested by the masses who had been waiting for the opportunity. People believe that if they succeed in getting part of the mountain they will get an abundance of sustenance.
SELIKURAN
Selikuran comes from the word selikur, which in means 21 in Java Language. Every day on the 21st of Ramadan in the city of Surakarta and Yogyakarta, a Selikuran ceremony is held to welcome the night of the holy qodar by making food in the form of rice to be distributed to the community.
SEKATEN
Sekaten is the tradition of sounding the court's gamelan music. The first time it happened on the island of Java. This tradition is a means of spreading the religion of Islam carried out by Sunan Bonang. In the past, every time Sunan Bonang rang a gamelan punctuated with songs that contained Islam and every turn of the gamelan was punctuated by reading syahadatain, which in the end this tradition was called sekaten. The purpose of sekaten is syahadatain.
