Batavia Siege


On August 27, 1628, the Mataram army was led by Tumenggung Bahureksa, arrived in Batavia. The second army arrived in October led by Prince Mandurareja (grandson of Ki Juru Martani). With total 10,000 soldiers. Great war occurred in Holandia fortress. Mataram troops suffered destruction due to lack of supplies.


Sultan Agung attacked Batavia for the second time in the following year. The first troops led by Adipati Ukur set out in May 1629, while the second army led by Adipati Juminah departed in June. A total of all 14,000 soldiers. The first attack failure was anticipated by establishing rice barns in Karawang and Cirebon. But the VOC managed to destroy all of the supply.




Despite the defeat, the second attack of Sultan Agung managed to stem and pollute the Ciliwung River, which resulted in the outbreak of cholera diseases struck Batavia. The Governor-General of VOC, J.P. Coen died as victim of the outbreak.
