A HERO FULL OF PRIDE

His real name is Jaka Umbaran. Son of Panembahan Senopati who was born to Ki Ageng Giring's daughter's wife.

Babad Tanah Jawi relates, Ki Ageng Giring found a magical coconut which, if the water was drunk until it was finished in one gulp, would cause the drinker to lower the kings of Java. Accidentally the coconut water was consumed by Ki Ageng Pamanahan who visited Giring in thirst. Ki Ageng Pamanahan felt guilty after knowing the efficacy of the magic coconut water. He then married his son, namely Sutawijaya with Ki Ageng Giring's daughter.

But because his wife was ugly, Sutawijaya returned to Mataram and left him in a state of containing. Putri Giring later gave birth to Jaka Umbaran (diumbar in Javanese meaning "abandoned"). After growing up, Jaka Umbaran went to Mataram to get recognition from his father. At that time Sutawijaya had already held Panembahan Senopati. Through a heavy struggle, Jaka Umbaran finally managed to get recognition as the son of Mataram with the title Pangeran Purbaya.

The chronicle tells of the two most powerful Panembahan Senopati sons. The first is Raden Rangga who dies young, while the second is Purbaya. He was the protector of the Mataram throne when led by his nephew, Sultan Agung (1613-1645).

Some Javanese people believe that Sultan Agung is actually Purbaya's biological son. It is said that Sultan Agung when the baby deliberately exchanged Purbaya with a baby born to his wife. This story seems to suggest that Sultan Agung is a combination of the blood of Mataram and Giring. But this opinion is only a minority opinion whose truth is difficult to prove.

Prince Purbaya lived up to the time of the reign of Amangkurat I son of Sultan Agung. He almost became a victim when Amangkurat I crushed senior figures who were not in accordance with his political policies. Fortunately, Purbaya at that time was protected by the suri mother (widow of Sultan Agung).

Purbaya died in October 1676 while participating in the Trunajaya rebellion. Amangkurat I sent a large force led by Adipati Anom, his son, to destroy the village of Demung (near Besuki) which was the headquarters of the Makasarese people of Trunajaya. A major war occurred in the village of Gogodog. Pangeran Purbaya, who was elderly, died from being beaten by Makasarese and Madurese people.
